ALL-PARTY PARLIAMENTARY RUGBY LEAGUE GROUP Parliament hails growth in rugby league Members of the Parliamentary Rugby League Group have hailed the growth in regular participation in rugby league, as announced by Sport England last week. The motion, tabled in the House of Commons by the Group’s Chairman, Leeds North West MP Greg Mulholland, praises versions of the game outside the traditional 13-a-side format – touch, tag, wheelchair and masters and welcomes all those new or returning to the game. The motion states the “increase demonstrates the role rugby league plays in communities throughout the UK and is recognition of the game’s inclusive and welcoming nature”. The Parliamentary Rugby League Group was reformed two weeks ago after the General Election and will next meet on Tuesday 7 July where MPs, Peers and non-Parliamentary Members will debate issues. On tabling the motion, Mulholland said “the increase in grassroots participation is great news for rugby league.  That it came from the game’s format development is testament to the continued innovation of the sport and its on-going commitment to supporting community sport.  All involved should be very proud and I hope to see many of 7,300 joining the Group and letting up know their thoughts in Westminster.” Supporting the Motion, Warrington South MP David Mowat said “all in the Group welcome increase in grassroot sport, and particularly in rugby league.  All MPs in the Group will be able to see the growth of the game in their constituencies and we should be very proud of the game’s development at all levels.  I encourage all my colleagues with rugby league clubs in their constituencies to join the Parliamentary Rugby League Group and meet players and fans at our regular meetings.” The Early Day Motion in full: Rugby League participation That this House welcomes the 7,300 strong increase in regular participation in rugby league as announced by Sport England; recognises the importance of sport and physical recreation for the British public; welcomes all those new to playing the game of rugby league; believes this increase demonstrates the role rugby league plays in communities throughout the UK and is recognition of the game’s inclusive and welcoming nature for people of any background, age, gender or ability; welcomes versions of the game – touch, tag, wheelchair, masters, and 13-a-side – in this growth; and congratulates all involved in the game’s administration for the increase.
